FUTURE DOCTORS Medical Camp OVERVIEW

Curriculum*

Future Doctors is a five-day program that covers a variety of topics in the medical field in various formats including lectures, workshops, hands-on activities, and one-on-one mentoring. The exact content is subject to change but here is a basic outline of the content we covered each day from last year — please note that it is just the “highlights” of each day and does not include all the activities! Other lectures, dissections, activities, etc. are included in the curriculum — it’s a 5 day program so you get 40 hours of content! A video is available on our website to help you get a visual.

Day 1: Future Doctors Kit & Venipuncture/Phlebotomy workshop

  • How to use a stethoscope, pulse oximeter, take blood pressure, etc.
  • Taking vitals
  • Several venipuncture and phlebotomy stations, each with different needles 
  • Learn how to give different types of injections and draw blood

Day 2: BLS & Cardio

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification course
  • Cardiology unit including how to use & read an EKG

Day 3: Suturing & Career Panel

  • Learn how to suture different types of stitches and knots 
  • Career panel featuring professionals in different healthcare careers, opportunity to ask questions
  • Last year we had a pediatric emergency room physician, medical researcher, NICU nurse, pharmacist, and OBGYN on our panel!

Day 4: Stop the Bleed & Mass Trauma (Emergency Medicine Day)

  • Learn how to effectively pack a wound to prevent a bleed-out
  • Mass trauma simulation to provide quality care to dozens of critically wounded patients

Day 5: Scrubbing & Fracture Reduction Surgery

  • Essential sanitation and sterility techniques for surgery
  • Mock orthopedic surgery with teammate
